Soil microbial biogeography is to study the spatial distribution pattern of soil microorganisms and their changes over time. Soil microbial biogeographical study can help to find out unknown biological resources in soils, to understand the mechanisms of formation and maintenance of microbial diversity in soils, and to predict the evolutional direction of terrestrial ecosystem functioning. Since the vast majority of soil microorganisms cannot be cultivated and the techniques for microbial community analysis are limited, soil microbial biogeography has lagged behind the biogeography of plants and animals for a long time. Since twenty-first century, the breakthrough of high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis has brought unprecedented opportunities for soil microbial biogeography, making it a hot spot in the field of soil biology and microbial ecology in the world. In this paper, we expatiated the present research status of soil microbial biogeography, suggested the research direction and development trend, and prospected the future research in this field.

Chu Haiyan Received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Anhui Agriculture University in 1994 and Huazhong Agriculture University in 1997, respectively, received Ph.D. degree in soil microbiology from the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Prior to current post, he was with Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences and National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences in Japan for four years and Queen's University, Canada for three and half years. In August 2010, he joined the Institute of Soil Science under the Hundred Talent Program of CAS. His research interests are soil microbial ecology, microbial biogeography, and metagenomics. He is currently investigating microbial communities in agricultural soils as well as in cold terrestrial ecosystems, and the responses and feedbacks of microbial communities to climate change and agricultural management. He also serves as editorial board member of Environmental Microbiology, Scientific Reports, and M-Systems, as well as the board member of Sub-society of Soil Microbes and Biochemistry, the Soil Science Society of China, and the board member of Sub-society of Agricultural Microbiology, the Chinese Society for Microbiology.
